In second grade religion, students continue to learn about Jesus, the Church, and more importantly, they prepare for the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Second Grade places a strong emphasis on core curriculum: reading and math skills. There is a focus on reading to understand, reading fluently, and reading for enjoyment. Students work on phonics and spelling rules. Sentence structure, grammar, letter writing, as well as an introduction to topic sentences and paragraph writing are all a part of the English Language Arts Common Core curriculum. The math curriculum adheres to the Common Core Math Standards. The focus is on teaching core concepts and procedures and taking the necessary time needed to allow students to master them. Topics addressed are addition and subtraction to triple digits, operations and algebraic thinking, time, money, fractions, and geometry. Simple multiplication is included, also. Social studies and science teach students about the world they live in. Students also receive instruction in the areas of art, technology, music, Spanish and P.E.
