St. Pius School was founded by Monsignor Michael Fitzsimon to meet the educational and spiritual needs of the children of the newly established parish. Over the years, the combined efforts of the administration, faculty, parish, priests and parents have provided a safe, loving environment for Catholic education to flourish. St. Pius School is first and foremost a Catholic School which exists to pass on the faith.
St. Pius School has responded to the educational needs of young Catholics for over 65 years and continues to foster growth in each child. Through a partnership with the families, each child's individual strengths are recognized and maximized for spiritual, emotional, intellectual, social and physical growth. The school provides a quality education in a loving environment and works in conjunction with the primary educators of each child, their parents, to ensure the best for each student.
St. Pius School is a fiscally sound Catholic parish school with students in nine classes, kindergarten through grade eight. Founded in 1953 and originally staffed by the Sisters of the Holy Cross, the school has been ably led by an all-lay staff since 1985.
In 1986 a School Board was established to assist with policy development and to give focused attention to the future fiscal needs of St. Pius School. During that same year, the school's financial future was made more secure by a generous $500,000 gift from a long time parishioner, James Kilbane, to begin an endowment fund. A major endowment campaign was held in 1989-90 to relieve the schools dependency on uncertain types of fundraising and to enlarge the already established St. Pius School Endowment Fund.
In 1987, the school built an addition which housed the Extended Care program. The site has moved, but this program meets the needs of working parents as it is open daily from 7:30AM to 6:00PM. In the summer of 2006 air conditioning was installed in the entire school, a result of PTG fundraising, student Walk-A-Thon money and savings. A preschool was opened in 2013 for children from 3 to 5 years of age.
Over the years, the academic and enrichment programs of the school have grown significantly. St. Pius School has special programs in science, math, art, Spanish, technology, physical education and music, with specialists teaching in each of these areas. A resource program is in place to assist students with special needs. A full program of after school sports, study hall and other after school programs round out the St. Pius School educational experience.
St. Pius School is fully accredited through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Western Catholic Education Association. Students receive religious instruction and a comprehensive core curriculum enhanced with computer training and use of computers as tools to assist them in their daily lives.
